Cowboys: Why DaRon Bland's next Pick-6 opportunity could come in Week 13
Tim Heitman-USA TODAY Sports

Dallas Cowboys cornerback DaRon Bland tied the NFL record for most pick-sixes in a single season in Week 11 only to break the record four days later in Week 12.

Now, he's got six more games to separate himself from future challengers to his, and only his, historic mark.

What we can't ignore is that his best shot at it could come against the Seattle Seahawks this Thursday night.

At least numerically, the above is true. Pro Football Focus does a great job tracking turnover-worthy plays on top of keeping tabs on interceptions. What this does is give us a more accurate view of how turnover-prone a quarterback really is.

Luckily for the rising Cowboys cornerback, Seahawks QB Geno Smith has the sixth-highest percentage of turnover-worthy throws among quarterbacks with 260 attempts, which means he could very well give the secondary chances on this one.

If Bland gets plenty of looks against D.K. Metcalf, he can expect a lot of 50-50 balls as that's how Metcalf tends to win. No one has been targeted in more contested situations than him this season (47). The Pro Bowl wide receiver understands he's got a challenge ahead of him.

"Him and (Stephon) Gilmore are a tandem and hate to see Trevon Diggs go down, my prayers go out to him on his road to recovery," Metcalf told reporters earlier this week. "But it seems like the next one up is duplicate of him so, got to shave angles."

Bland will now have to fight the same foe that Trevon Diggs had to back in 2021: Greed.

Sure, he wants the record and he should want it. But he must play with a cool head and not be over-aggressive while risking giving up explosive plays. He'll have to learn how to wait for his moment.

The good news? Everything is the cherry on top now that he stands alone in league history. There's no reason to chase plays that aren't there anymore.

Just for fun, here are the Cowboys' next sixth opponents ranked from highest turnover-worthy-play percentage to the lowest:

  1. Geno Smith
  2. Sam Howell
  3. Tua Tagovailoa
  4. Jalen Hurts
  5. Jared Goff
  6. Josh Allen
