'I’ve been in his shoes,' Matteo Berrettini wishes compatriot Jannik Sinner good luck after he withdrew from Rome Open due to injury

Jannik Sinner withdrew from the ongoing Rome Open to the disappointment of the home crowd. A heavy favorite on the Foro Italico court, Sinner suffered a hip injury during last week’s Madrid Open.

Sinner’s compatriot Matteo Berrettini understands what it means to miss tournaments due to injuries, and backed him for not playing, saying the 22-year-old has his whole career ahead of him. The former World No.6 recalls how empty he used to feel while dealing with injuries, but believes it will be different for Sinner.

Certainly, from the few statements I have heard, he is right, he still has his whole career ahead of him, and he was right to stop. Unfortunately, I've been in his shoes. I know well what it means.  Matteo Berrettini told Corriere dello Sport

Berrettini revealed he and Sinner haven’t met yet, but they often write to each other. He called the youngster a mature boy who can decide his future.

I don't think I can give him any advice. He doesn't need it, because he is looked after very well and he is a mature boy. I believe that when he makes a decision it is for his future. I think he has what he has done for his future. Matteo Berrettini added

Due to the injury, Sinner ended up withdrawing from the Madrid Open quarterfinal against Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime, who later reached the final but lost to Andrey Rublev

Jannik Sinner gives update about Roland Garros participation

Jannik Sinner gave an update about his injury on Sunday on social media. He wrote he went back to Monte-Carlo and did some tests and if the injury doesn’t get healed 100 percent, he may end up missing the Roland Garros, which will start on May 20.

We realized something was not totally good. If it is not 100 percent healed, I'll stay out a little longer. Jannik Sinner wrote on X

Sinner made it to the second round in last year’s Roland Garros. His best performance in Paris came in 2020 when he played in the quarterfinal.

The World No.2 has already lifted three titles this season, including his first Australian Open-his first Grand Slam singles title. The next two titles came at the ATP Rotterdam and the Miami Open.

The Miami Open triumph took him to the second spot in the rankings by dethroning Carlos Alcaraz. The Italian is 28-2 on the season and has lifted 13 titles in his career so far.
